NEW ZEALAND’S FIRST GRAND CHAMPION BORDER COLLIE!
The only male in this litter – a similar breeding to that which produced the great AUST CH Lochinbrae Of Clan-Abby – Mr Man was retained at Clan-Abby Kennels. Stunning at 8 weeks, Mr Man was seldom shown until he was two years of age due to our ugly duckling needing time to turn into a beautiful swan! Mr Man won his first Best In Show in the South Island of New Zealand at the Mackenzie Highland Canine Assn at 2.5 years of age. The working group judge was breed specialist Mr. Syd Munton of Tasmania. His second Best In Show came the following year. Then at 4 years of age Mr Man gained his third Best In Show. In New Zealand a dog must win 3 Best In Show’s at all breeds championships shows plus 50 Challenge Certificates to gain the NZ Grand Championship Title. Upon winning his 3rd Best In Show, Mr Man still needed another few challenges to gain his NZ Grand Championship Title. He was awarded his 50th Challenge in November 1993 becoming New Zealand’s first border collie Grand Champion. Mr Man was also awarded Best In Show at Collie Club and Working Dog Speciality Championship Shows during his show career. After gaining his NZ Grand Championship Title, we decided to let Mr Man have a short holiday in Australia with Lynn and Bill Harrison of Tullacrest Kennels who campaigned him to his Australian Title. After returning to New Zealand, we felt Mr Man had nothing further to prove in the NZ showring. Mr Man carried on to Japan where he gained his Japanese Title with a Best In Show All Breeds in Japan. He was the Pedigree Award winner in that country during his show career and won Best Of Breed at the Tokyo FCI International Dog Show in 2000 aged 9 years and still loving the showring! Mr Man has champion progeny in NZ and overseas. His son in the USA, AM CH Kiwi-Envoy From Clan-Abby CDX became the first male American Champion border collie and the first border collie to win the Pedigree Award.
